Natural gas prices by state
Natural gas delivered to U.S. homes cost an average of $14.50 per thousand cubic feet (Mcf) in 2024 (EIA, Natural Gas Annual). State averages run from $8.22 in Montana to $48.88 in Hawaii — a spread driven less by the price of gas itself than by the cost of delivering it.

Source: EIA, Natural Gas Annual 2024, Table 23 — average price of natural gas delivered to residential consumers (Form EIA-176). Per-therm figures are the same prices divided by 10.37 (1 Mcf ≈ 10.37 therms).
What "delivered" includes
The delivered price is everything at the meter: the wholesale cost of the gas, interstate pipeline transportation, and your local distribution company's charges for the pipes, metering, and service that bring it to your home. In much of the country the delivery side is the larger half of the residential price, which is why states sitting on top of gas fields can still post mid-table prices, and dense older networks in the Northeast post high ones.
The units on your bill
- Mcf — a thousand cubic feet, the unit of EIA's state table.
- Therm — 100,000 Btu of heat. 1 Mcf ≈ 10.37 therms, so divide the Mcf price by 10.37 to compare with a per-therm bill.
- CCF — a hundred cubic feet; 1 CCF ≈ 1.037 therms. A bill in CCF prices gas at roughly a tenth of the Mcf figure per unit.
Why this page publishes prices, not "average gas bills"
A credible average bill needs both a price and a typical consumption figure from the same official source. EIA's annual price table carries the price for every state but no household consumption figure we can stand behind on the same basis — so rather than multiply a verified price by an unverified usage guess, we publish the price and let the calculator apply it to your therms from your bill. Winter heating months, for a gas-heated home, run far above the annual average month; a summer month can be a tenth of a January one.
Your winter therms at your state's delivered average price — the fastest honest estimate of a heating month.
