Heating oil prices by state

Residential heating oil averaged $6.190 per gallon across the United States in the EIA survey week of October 19, 2026. EIA surveys heating oil weekly — October through March only — and only in the 21 states where oil is a common heating fuel. Those are the only state averages that exist; this page prints exactly those.

Source: EIA, Heating Oil and Propane Update, week of October 19, 2026 — residential heating oil prices in dollars per gallon, excluding taxes. The fill column is the published price multiplied by a standard 275-gallon tank size, shown so the per-gallon price reads as the delivery households actually pay for.

How the survey works — and its limits

EIA collects residential heating-oil prices weekly during the heating season, from October through March, in the states where oil heat is concentrated — the Northeast above all, plus parts of the Midwest and mid-Atlantic. Outside the season it publishes no weekly price, and for the other 29 states it publishes no state average at all: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming. If your state is on that list, there is no official average to quote — any site showing one is estimating, and we don't.

What a heating-oil month actually costs

Oil heat doesn't arrive as a monthly bill; it arrives as a tank. Cost therefore comes in steps: the size of the tank, how much of it a cold month burns, and the per-gallon price on delivery day. The fill column above is the honest unit of comparison. Two further costs ride along that no price table captures: burner servicing, and the price difference between automatic delivery and will-call — charged by suppliers, varying by company, and not published by EIA, so not estimated here.
